The reason for this is that it only started to appear in our language and that of organisations, in the latter half of the 20th century. It has a direct impact on the employees&rsquo; individual and group performance, on their intellectual and physical ability, their savoir-faire, as well as on the organisation.But how is motivation defined in terms of business?<\/p>\n<p data-w-id=\"2461533b-a8e2-98d9-8ffc-7177b9c0ff44\" data-wf-id=\"[&quot;2461533b-a8e2-98d9-8ffc-7177b9c0ff44&quot;]\" data-automation-id=\"dyn-item-rich-text-input\"><\/p>\n<p data-w-id=\"b15c5056-4da0-7baf-3e47-8b5b078d2126\" data-wf-id=\"[&quot;b15c5056-4da0-7baf-3e47-8b5b078d2126&quot;]\" data-automation-id=\"dyn-item-rich-text-input\">Vellerand and Thrill (1993) came up with a new definition of motivation, which captures the difficulty of being able to directly see a person&rsquo;s motivation:<\/p>\n<p data-w-id=\"0db753a3-d093-6671-6f7b-ce7a63316ce0\" data-wf-id=\"[&quot;0db753a3-d093-6671-6f7b-ce7a63316ce0&quot;]\" data-automation-id=\"dyn-item-rich-text-input\"><\/p>\n<p data-w-id=\"1f1f8dae-4a54-aee4-964f-28ed4ba8042e\" data-wf-id=\"[&quot;1f1f8dae-4a54-aee4-964f-28ed4ba8042e&quot;]\" data-automation-id=\"dyn-item-rich-text-input\">\u2018Motivation is a hypothetical construct used to describe the internal or external forces producing the initiation, direction, intensity, and persistence of a behavior\u2019. This feeling of motivation can therefore be either \u2018weak or strong, varying both between individuals at given times, and in the same person at different times, and according to circumstances.\u2019<\/p>\n<p data-w-id=\"fb2ce621-d802-77f9-767c-b9fc27eaee02\" data-wf-id=\"[&quot;fb2ce621-d802-77f9-767c-b9fc27eaee02&quot;]\" data-automation-id=\"dyn-item-rich-text-input\"><\/p>\n<p data-w-id=\"8d8c5e33-b52b-1d36-5be9-2039e1d3bae2\" data-wf-id=\"[&quot;8d8c5e33-b52b-1d36-5be9-2039e1d3bae2&quot;]\" data-automation-id=\"dyn-item-rich-text-input\">It explains that motivation is triggered by an external factor (a certain situation, ways of working, environment etc). Motivation has effects on the way employees work and on the effort that an individual makes. There are several theories that answer this question and we will look at the three main ones:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">The American humanist psychologist, Maslow, thinks that motivation happens when an individual feels a desire to satisfy an internal need. Motivation therefore comes from willpower and ends when an individual has fulfilled a need. The individual then finds a new need to fulfill which will create motivation and the cycle continues. Such as, achievements, recognition, responsibility, personal development possibilities etc\u00a0<\/li>\n<li data-w-id=\"bdcfe9b7-6eea-96c1-54ef-3c0caae7c61f\" data-wf-id=\"[&quot;bdcfe9b7-6eea-96c1-54ef-3c0caae7c61f&quot;]\" data-automation-id=\"dyn-item-rich-text-input\">The second category regroups motivating factors, which, unlike the first category, don&rsquo;t contribute to employee satisfaction, which include: superior colleagues, admin and company policies, company prestige, salary etc.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p data-w-id=\"0aaab273-4ce1-08c6-2df3-1f782f68fb2a\" data-wf-id=\"[&quot;0aaab273-4ce1-08c6-2df3-1f782f68fb2a&quot;]\" data-automation-id=\"dyn-item-rich-text-input\">\u200d<\/p>\n<p data-w-id=\"565c4f1e-c769-93e6-0fea-fedf9b67ca7a\" data-wf-id=\"[&quot;565c4f1e-c769-93e6-0fea-fedf9b67ca7a&quot;]\" data-automation-id=\"dyn-item-rich-text-input\">For Deci and Ryan, motivation is driven by needs that the employees develop to a greater or lesser extent, the need to feel competent. Everyone is looking to satisfy a need for skills, to develop their ability to interact with their professional and social environment. This will allow for any necessary tools to be put in place to increase motivation at work.
